Fady Mahouly
The situation in the town of Maghdouche, overlooking the city of Sidon, in southern Lebanon, has returned to normal following the incident that occurred yesterday evening between young men from the neighboring town of Ankoun, members of the Maghdouche municipal police, and a number of young men, which developed into gunfire and injuries. As a result, the Lebanese army intervened and took control of the situation, according to what Al-Nahar reported.
According to sources in the municipality of Maghdoucheh, the municipality received a report at night about the presence of a motorcycle in the “Rous al-Haddadine” locality located within the town, on the outskirts of Ankoun, with two people on board, which raised a state of suspicion.
Immediately, a municipal patrol consisting of two cars and a number of young men from the town headed to Mahalla, where the motorcycle was found lying on the ground, without anyone near it.
While members of the municipal police were trying to move the motorcycle, they were surprised by the arrival of several cars carrying a woman and about eight people, who got out upon their arrival and began assaulting these members with beatings, sticks, and knives, as well as the deputy mayor who was accompanying them, in addition to a number of young men from the town who intervened to defend them.
Young men from Anqoun also threw two bombs at the youth of the municipality, before they started shooting in the air, which led to a significant escalation of tension. They also destroyed a number of municipal cars during the quarrel, which quickly developed into widespread conflict and complete chaos in the place, especially since the participants in the quarrel from the Anqoun side were carrying knives, sticks, and weapons.
It was also reported that a Lebanese army officer was also attacked while trying to intervene to contain the problem.
The tension continued for about two hours, before patrols from the Lebanese Army Intelligence arrived and worked to cordon off the problem and calm the situation, in addition to pursuing those involved, a number of whom have so far been arrested.
