US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that "Iran wants to conclude an agreement," but indicated that "an agreement has not been reached with Tehran yet," expressing his "dissatisfaction" in this regard, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his belief that "progress has been made toward reaching an agreement," amid conflicting statements between the two parties regarding an announcement by official Iranian media that a preliminary document of understanding had been reached with Washington. Trump added, in statements following a meeting with his government officials at the White House, that “Iran very much wants to reach an agreement,” considering that Tehran “has no other choice,” while stressing again that “Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon, and I am preventing it from doing so for the sake of the world.” The US President called on Iran to "act like any other country," considering that "the Strait of Hormuz will be open to everyone and no one will control it." In this context, the US President said, during a phone call with PBS News, that Iran will not receive sanctions relief in exchange for giving up highly enriched uranium. Trump responded to a question about whether the current agreement meant that Iran would give up highly enriched uranium in exchange for sanctions relief. He said: “No, no, not at all...no sanctions relief, no.” The Iranian Fars News Agency said earlier on Wednesday that the US President may unilaterally announce the success of the talks, but it quoted a member of the Iranian negotiating team as saying that “there are still outstanding issues.”
