The United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced today, Thursday, the death of one of its peacekeepers at dawn today, as a result of serious wounds he sustained as a result of mortar shells falling on his position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon.
She indicated that two other peacekeepers were also injured and are receiving treatment at a UNIFIL medical facility.
She added that shortly after the incident that occurred late last night, the soldier who was seriously injured was airlifted to a Beirut hospital, where he died as a result of his injury.
UNIFIL extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late soldier, stressing that he lost his life for the sake of peace, and wished a speedy and complete recovery for the two injured soldiers.
She added: "UNIFIL has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of this tragic incident."
It indicated that it had observed a noticeable increase in the number of falling projectiles in southern Lebanon, stressing the need to put an end to the violence.
UNIFIL renewed its call on all parties to fulfill their obligations under international law, and to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property at all times, including refraining from any actions that might expose peacekeeping forces to danger.
It also called on the competent national authorities to investigate the incident, bring those responsible to justice, and ensure that they are held criminally accountable.
It stressed that deliberate attacks on peacekeeping forces constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.
