Aoun: We welcome assistance, not interference
Fady Mahouly
On Monday, President Joseph Aoun received a delegation from the Roman Catholic League, where he affirmed in various positions that Lebanon welcomes any assistance to end the war, while distinguishing between support and interference in internal affairs, stressing that Lebanon is a sovereign state “and no one is negotiating with it.”
He explained that the state, not the sects, is the one that protects everyone, stressing that “there is no choice but the one, strong state that represents all the Lebanese,” and that work continues to achieve this goal.
He pointed out that political competition is legitimate, but it should not turn into obstructing the state’s path or “putting sticks in the wheels,” pointing out that the right to disagree is “sacred,” while disagreement between the Lebanese is not permissible, especially in the current circumstances.
He concluded that the obvious approach to combating corruption is electronic governance and an effective and independent judiciary.
