Fady Mahouly
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received his counterpart, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, and during the meeting, the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran was discussed, in addition to developments in the Strait of Hormuz and southern Lebanon, during a visit by Araqchi to Iraq.
Araqchi said that Iran alone is responsible for returning shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels.
Araghchi also called on the United States to stop Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
He stressed that relations between Iran and Iraq are “very strong,” stressing the continuation of cooperation between the two countries in various fields.
For his part, the Iraqi Foreign Minister said that his country's relations are "excellent" with both the United States and Iran, stressing Baghdad's readiness to work with both sides in order to end the war.
He stressed that ending the state of war is a priority for everyone, and that Iraq rejects expanding the scope of the war and supports solving problems through negotiations, pointing to the possibility of forming different frameworks to protect the region.
He added that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz was one of the reasons for stopping the export of Iraqi oil, and that this had a major impact on the economy.
He also indicated that he discussed with his Iranian counterpart a number of issues of common interest, in addition to the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran.
Araghchi arrived on Sunday morning in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on a one-day official visit. It aims to hold high-level consultations with senior Iraqi officials, focusing on bilateral relations, regional developments, and developments in the international arena.
