Mexico eliminates Ecuador and reaches the final 16

The Mexico national team has continued its successful campaign so far in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after qualifying for the round of 16 in the competition, following a 2-0 victory over the Ecuadorian national team, on Tuesday evening, local time, in the round of 32 of the World Cup, which is currently being held in the United States and Canada, in addition to Mexico.
At Mexico City Stadium, the Mexican national team took the lead with a goal through Julián Quiñones in the 22nd minute, before his veteran teammate Raul Jimenez added the second goal in the 31st minute.
The Ecuadorian national team finished the match with ten players, after its player, Piero Hincapie, was sent off in the fifth minute of stoppage time for the second half.
The Mexico national team faces an expected date in the round of 16 of the tournament on July 5, with the winner of the match between England and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which will be held on Wednesday evening, local time, as part of the round of 32 competitions.
