The Belgian national team overturned a two-goal deficit to a thrilling 3-2 victory over its Senegalese counterpart, in a dramatic confrontation in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, to reserve its place in the round of 16 after one of the most exciting matches of the tournament.
The Senegalese team entered the match strongly, and succeeded in opening the scoring in the 24th minute through Habib Diarra, before Ismaila Sarr increased the lead by scoring the second goal in the 51st minute, putting the “Lions of Teranga” on the cusp of qualification.
While the match seemed headed for a Senegalese victory, the Belgian team rose up in the final minutes of regular time, with Romelu Lukaku reducing the gap in the 86th minute, before Youri Tielemans equalized in the 89th minute, forcing extra time.
The excitement continued during extra time, before the Belgian team won a penalty kick in the last moments, which Youri Tielemans successfully converted, scoring his second and third personal goal for Belgium, giving his country a decisive victory and a well-deserved qualification to the 16th World Cup final.
