Prime Minister Nawaf Salam confirmed, in a joint press conference held with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani at the Government Palace, that the goal of the two parties’ meeting is cooperation in a number of fields, foremost of which is the issue of electrical connectivity between Lebanon and Syria, in addition to transportation, exchange of goods, facilitating traffic on the borders, and developing relations. In turn, Minister Al-Shaibani said: “We signed the formation of the Supreme Committee and the partnership with Lebanon, and this framework will be a platform for all ministries to develop partnerships and security understandings. All we bring to Lebanon is love and a keenness to overcome the bad legacy in the relationship between the two countries.” Regarding the war between Hezbollah and Israel, he stressed that “Syria’s position is firm and rejects all Israeli attacks on Lebanon,” noting that “the subject of the framework agreement is an internal issue determined by the Lebanese interest and the Lebanese government is responsible for it. However, we want the atmosphere of understandings to be calm to lead to sustainable stability for Lebanon.” In a separate context, Al-Shaibani stressed "the necessity of handing over Syrian prisoners in Lebanon within the path agreed upon with the Lebanese government." As for non-Syrian prisoners, he pointed out that this is a matter that is being discussed calmly and respectfully between Syria and Lebanon.
