Basil: We support negotiation because it is an alternative to war

The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, affirmed that he is in favor of negotiating with Israel because negotiation is an alternative to war, and he is also in favor of the Lebanese state’s monopoly over decision-making and weapons on the ground.
He said in an interview with Al Jazeera, “We have no problem with negotiating with Israel in principle, and we are with negotiations that restore rights and achieve peace, and we are not with a surrender agreement,” stressing that, “We are with him on any path that leads us to removing the occupation and achieving state sovereignty.”
He added: "We support some of the contents of the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel, and we should not be limited to choosing between two paths, but rather they can be combined to achieve Lebanon's interest."
He stressed that, "We have major objections to the executive provisions in the framework agreement," stressing that, "We do not want anyone to negotiate on behalf of Lebanon, as Lebanon must negotiate on its own behalf."
Bassil saw that, “The agreement contains many obligations on Lebanon and no obligations on Israel, and there are no guarantees for Israel’s withdrawal in the framework agreement, and the framework agreement with Israel neglected the refugee issue.”
He considered that the framework agreement should not allow Israel to claim that it obtained cover for its presence in Lebanon, and the framework agreement with Israel has flaws in form and content.
He pointed out that Israel wants to create a problem between the Lebanese army and Hezbollah, and assigning the army to disarm Hezbollah will create a problem, and the presidents of the republic and the government had to protect themselves with a Lebanese card before negotiating with Israel.
He also saw that what Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa showed towards Lebanon is encouraging, and that his position of refusing to interfere in the war in Lebanon is positive and encouraging.
