An undermanned England eliminated Mexico, one of the host countries, from the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, after a difficult and exciting 3-2 victory over them on Sunday at the Asteca Stadium in Mexico City. The English team took the lead in the 36th minute through Jude Bellingham, and only two minutes passed for the same player to add the second goal for his team. The Mexican national team succeeded in reducing the difference in the 42nd minute through Julián Quinones, and the first half ended with the England national team leading by two goals to one. In the second half, England defender Garel Quansah was sent off, and his team continued the match with ten players from the 54th minute. The England team was able to score the third goal through Harry Kane from a penalty kick in the 60th minute, but the Mexican team succeeded in scoring the second goal in the same way through Raul Jimenez in the 69th minute. The England national team qualified to face Norway, next Sunday morning, in the quarter-finals, after Erling Haaland's teammates succeeded in reaching the same round by defeating Brazil 2-1 in the round of sixteen. The first period of the first half witnessed Mexican control, as the attacking trio of Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Gutierrez posed a great threat to English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The Mexican defense was also distinguished by its solidity, preventing attempts by Harry Kane, Saka and Anthony Gordon during the first quarter of an hour of the first half, keeping goalkeeper Raul Rangel's clean sheet. In the 36th minute, and contrary to the course of the match, the English team scored the lead goal through Bellingham, as Declan Rice ran from the right side, passing the ball to Saka, who entered the ball on the edge of the penalty area from the right side, to play a cross that Bellingham converted with a header into the net. Only two minutes passed for the English team to score the second goal through the same player, but the goal maker was the one who changed, as Kane played a cross from the right side, and Bellingham directed it with his foot past Rangel. The Mexican team did not give up despite the clear superiority of the English team, which tried to add a third goal to end everything before the end of the first half. But Julián Quinones, the Mexican striker, succeeded in scoring the goal to reduce the difference for Mexico in the 42nd minute, as he took advantage of the confusion of the English defense to clear one of the balls, and put it with a powerful shot past Pickford, ending the first half with his country trailing by one goal against England. Despite the clear pressure from the English team at the start of the second half, they were surprised by the expulsion of their defender Quansah, who ran over the foot of Mexico defender Jesus Gallardo in the 54th minute, earning a red card after the referee returned to the VAR technique. The English team was not affected by the expulsion on the offensive level, at least in the first minutes after the expulsion, and they received a penalty kick after Jordan was obstructed by Rangel, the Mexican goalkeeper, inside the penalty area. Kane successfully converted the penalty kick against Rangel in the 60th minute, but the Mexican team won a penalty kick nine minutes later, after Kane himself intervened on Gutierrez, the Mexico player, so Jimenez scored the second goal for Mexico. In the last minutes, the English team suffered the effects of Quansah's expulsion, as the Mexican team pushed hard to equalize, but they did not succeed in doing so amid great brilliance from goalkeeper Pickford and the English defense, after several changes from the German Thomas Tuchel, the England team's coach. The English team maintained its superiority in defence, despite numerous attempts by Mexico, and the referee blew the whistle at the end of the match, with England defeating Mexico 3-2.
