On Monday morning, the funeral procession for Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and a number of his family members began in the streets of the capital, Tehran, in a final farewell ceremony that is expected to last about ten hours, according to live scenes broadcast on Iranian state television.
The Iranian Radio and Television Corporation (IRIB) said on the Telegram application that “the funeral ceremony for the pure body of the imam and the martyr leader began moments ago in the capital,” noting the participation of “large crowds” of mourners.
Khamenei was martyred on the first day of the US-Iranian war on February 28.
General Hassan Hassanzadeh: “We ask the public to calmly go to Azadi Square,” where the motorcade is scheduled to arrive, as the authorities fear a deadly stampede like the one that occurred in 1989 during the funeral of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei’s predecessor.
