Prime Minister Nawaf Salam chaired a meeting to discuss the issue of waste treatment in Beirut, in which the Ministers of Interior and Municipalities, Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Hajjar, Minister of Environment Tamara Al-Zein, and MPs: Ibrahim Mneimneh, Fouad Makhzoumi, Melhem Khalaf, Imad Al-Hout, Faisal Al-Sayegh, Paula Yacoubian, Nadim Gemayel, Wadah Al-Sadiq, Amin Sheri, Ghassan Hasbani, Jihad Pakradouni, Hagop Trizian, Adnan, participated. Traboulsi, Muhammad Khawaja, Nicolas Sehnaoui, Cynthia Zarazir, the Chairman of the Council for Development and Reconstruction Muhammad Ali Qabbani, the Governor of Beirut, Judge Marwan Abboud, the file official in the governorate, Zaki Dhubyan, the Mayor of Beirut, Ibrahim Zidane, and the Chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, Marwan Rizkallah. Representative Ghassan Hasbani announced after the meeting: “During the meeting, the issue of the National Solid Waste Management Authority was raised, and the Council for Development and Reconstruction also presented a vision of what it is currently doing and the challenges facing this issue. The representatives presented their concerns and the concerns of the Beirut regions and their need for quick solutions, and several options were put forward to subject them to an integrated study that takes into account all environmental, economic and social factors, leading to a permanent solution, in addition to addressing the current challenges. He pointed out that this issue has been a problem for about ten years, and the current reality cannot continue as it is, and therefore this meeting was held under the chairmanship of President Salam to gather various ideas and reach final solutions. He added: “Several ideas and solutions have been proposed for study and research, including how to sort, composte, and treat before the landfilling stage, and mechanisms to reduce landfilling. The idea of studying the possibility of transporting waste to countries that can benefit from it in fuel production has also been proposed.” All ideas, old and new, were put on the table for comprehensive and integrated study.
