US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Washington and Tehran held “very good and productive” talks over the past two days to reach a complete solution to the state of hostility with Iran, stressing that he would postpone launching military strikes against Iranian energy and electricity sites for five days.
“I am pleased to announce that, over the past two days, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran have had very good and productive discussions about reaching a complete and final solution to the state of hostility between us in the Middle East,” Trump said.
He continued on the Truth Social platform, “Based on the nature and tone of these in-depth, detailed and constructive talks, which will continue throughout the week, the Ministry of Defense has directed to postpone any military action against power plants and energy infrastructure in Iran for a period of 5 days, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions.”
Earlier, Trump gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to open the Strait of Hormuz, warning of attacks targeting its energy stations if it did not respond to his request.
Trump said: “If Iran does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 hours from now, the United States will strike and destroy its power plants, starting with the largest.”
Last week, Trump said he was not interested in seeking a ceasefire with Iran, adding:
“We can have a dialogue, but I don’t want a ceasefire.”
