Aoun to Turk: Israeli attacks in the south are a violation of human rights.
Fady Mahouly
President Joseph Aoun affirmed, during his meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, that Israel’s continued destruction of homes and bulldozing of villages in the south constitutes a direct violation of human rights and a clear violation of international laws and norms, which requires international action to put an end to these violations.
Aoun pointed out that Israel also targeted religious and heritage sites, considering that this reflects “premeditated intentions against humans and quarantine,” especially since these sites are not military and do not witness an armed presence there.
Aoun stressed that Lebanon is committed to implementing the “framework formula,” but he fears that Israeli practices will affect its effectiveness, stressing that he will not accept the continued violation of its provisions.
For his part, Commissioner Volker Türk confirmed that the Commission is following developments in Lebanon, especially the ongoing Israeli attacks since last March 2, with the aim of preparing a detailed report on human rights violations.
