Former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Lebanon, Riad Salameh, lawyer Wassim Al-Ghawi, issued a statement on behalf of his family in which he confirmed that Salameh’s health condition is “chronic and unstable,” denying what is being circulated about the stability of his health condition and that it is limited to blood pressure disorders. The statement indicated that Salama needs specialized medical care and continuous monitoring in the hospital, considering that depriving him of receiving treatment and keeping him under intensive medical observation constitutes a threat to his life, after the reports of the medical committee appointed by the judiciary and his treating physician confirmed the seriousness of his condition and the possibility of it deteriorating suddenly. The statement added that the continuation of this reality does not only affect Salama’s procedural rights, but may also reflect on the course of the investigation, pointing out that during the past seven months he has provided all the information and documents required to the judiciary. The statement also considered that Salameh’s arrest came against the backdrop of a loan file unanimously approved by the Central Council of the Bank of Lebanon, and not by its unilateral decision, stressing that these loans were repaid in full and generated profits for the bank, which makes his detention, according to the statement, “unjustified.” Salama’s family concluded by appealing to the judiciary to protect his right to life and treatment, stressing that “the only true victory remains in revealing the truth,” through a judiciary that guarantees defense rights and protects the right to life.
