The Ministry of Public Works and Transport launched the first executive steps to rehabilitate the infrastructure and facilities associated with Klayaat Airport - President Rene Moawad Airport, as part of its plan to rehabilitate and operate it, allowing a gradual transition from the planning and preparation stage to the actual implementation stage on the ground. In this context, the Ministry announced, through the Public Procurement Authority’s platform, a tender for the implementation of rehabilitation and maintenance works on the road, entrance and aprons of Qlayaat Airport, with bids to be opened on August 27, 2026, considering these works an essential part of the requirements for rehabilitating the infrastructure surrounding the airport and ensuring the readiness of the entrances, aprons and facilities supporting its operation. This step comes within an integrated plan adopted by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to reposition Qlayaat Airport on the air transport map in Lebanon, by implementing the required works in successive stages, and in parallel with completing the necessary technical, operational, security and administrative requirements in accordance with the regulations and standards approved in the field of civil aviation. The Ministry stressed that the restarting of Qlayaat Airport constitutes a national and strategic project that goes beyond the technical and operational dimension of the airport, because of the role it can play in developing the air transport system in Lebanon, enhancing the capabilities of the civil aviation sector, and providing additional air infrastructure that supports Rafic Hariri International Airport - Beirut and increases the flexibility of the Lebanese air transport sector. Restarting the airport would also contribute to moving the economic and development wheel in Akkar Governorate, the North and its surrounding areas, by creating new investment and employment opportunities, revitalizing sectors related to transport, tourism, services and trade, and strengthening the connection of these regions with the basic economic facilities in the country. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport stressed that its approach to this file is based on moving from plans and studies to gradual field implementation, so that each component of the project is completed in accordance with priorities and operational needs, starting with the basic infrastructure, entrances and plazas, all the way to the completion of all other equipment, facilities and services required to operate the airport in a safe, organized and sustainable manner. The Ministry confirms that launching this tender constitutes one of the first executive steps in the process of rehabilitating Qlayaat Airport, and that work will continue successively to complete the rest of the stages, in coordination with the relevant official, security and technical authorities, in order to achieve the goal set by the Ministry to restart the airport and benefit from its capabilities within an integrated national vision for developing the air transport sector in Lebanon.
