The Minister of Information, Lawyer Dr. Paul Morcos, blessed the adoption of the “New Media Law” in the House of Representatives, stressing that it constitutes a turning point that ends work on a legislative text dating back more than three decades, and keeps pace with the rapid developments that the media scene has witnessed during these years. He added in a post on his account on the “X” platform: “Thanks to the political leaders, heads of parliamentary committees and representatives, in addition to the contributing organizations, most notably UNESCO and the Maharat Foundation.” The Minister of Information explained that despite the qualitative shift represented by the new legislation in regulating the sector, there are trade union and media observations and suggestions that he personally carried to the House of Representatives, but he did not succeed in convincing the House to include them in the final text. Morcos stressed his commitment to continuing to develop the legal text and correct its gaps, declaring his intention to submit without delay an expedited draft law that includes the demands raised, most notably the complete abolition of any imprisonment penalty against journalists, in keeping with the spirit of the law and protecting freedom of expression.
