The General Electricity Company in Libya announced, on Wednesday, that a power station in the city of Zawiya, west of the country, had completely burned down and been out of service, after it was targeted, as part of attacks on vital facilities since last Saturday. The company said in a statement: “The 30/11 substation south of Al-Zawiya was targeted, which led to its complete burning and being out of service, causing the loss of electrical power in large areas south of the city of Al-Zawiya.” She added that immediately after the accident occurred, the company's technical teams moved to the site "to determine and determine the extent of the damage, and to begin taking the necessary technical measures to address the repercussions of the accident and work to restore nutrition to the affected areas." It warned of "the danger of continued attacks on electrical network facilities and components, and the direct repercussions that may have on the stability of the public network." She continued, "The loss of more conversion stations and power transmission lines and components may lead to widespread disturbances in the system, which may lead to a partial or general shutdown of the electrical network." The company stressed that the attacks and security imbalances witnessed by Al-Zawiya during the last period “had a direct impact on the electricity sector.” She explained that it "caused serious damage to a number of network facilities and components, in addition to its direct impact on the maintenance programs for the production units of the Zawiya Electricity Station." She added: "After targeting the facilities of the Zawiya power (generation) station today, the American company GE stopped all its work inside the station, and withdrew its technical teams from the work sites, until it was confirmed that security conditions were in place." The company said that it "disclaims its responsibility to the Libyan people for any consequences or damages that may befall the network or affect the continuity of electrical supply, as a result of the continued targeting of its facilities and components or the inability to carry out maintenance and operation work in a safe environment." It renewed its call to all relevant authorities “to assume their responsibilities in protecting production and conversion stations, power transmission lines, and various components of the electrical network, and to secure the local and foreign technical teams working in them.” Earlier Wednesday, eyewitnesses told Anadolu that an unknown drone targeted a power station in Al-Zawiya at dawn, causing a fire and a power outage in several neighborhoods.
