The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) imposed a set of sanctions on the Argentine Football Association and a number of players and officials of the national team, against the backdrop of events witnessed in various matches during the 2026 World Cup, including events that occurred during the final match against Spain.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to fine the Federation a total amount of up to 321 thousand dollars, due to violations related to using a sporting event to organize demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, team misconduct, discrimination and racist abuse, in addition to violations related to order and security in matches.
The committee also decided to oblige the Argentine national team to play its next two matches at home with an audience attendance not exceeding 50 percent of the capacity, against the backdrop of the violation related to discrimination and racist abuse, according to the official FIFA website.
The penalties included obliging the Argentine Federation to invest $100,000 of the fine in a plan to combat discrimination, suspending the implementation of part of the penalty, which includes one match and $100,000 of the fine, and placing it under a probationary period.
Following a report submitted by the appointed Prosecutor for Disciplinary and Ethical Affairs regarding the events that took place in the final between Spain and Argentina at the New York Stadium on July 19, the Committee imposed additional sanctions on a number of members of the Argentine national team.
The committee decided to suspend Leandro Paredes for 10 matches and fined him $90,000, while Nahuel Molina received a 7-match suspension, in addition to a fine of $90,000.
Thiago Almada was also suspended for one match and fined $30,000, while Roberto Ayala, the national team manager, was suspended for three matches and fined $30,000.
The sanctions also included player Pablo Martin Baez Gavira (Gavira), who was suspended for one match and fined $30,000.
