Prime Minister Nawaf Salam made a call to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, against the backdrop of the ongoing Israeli statements and attacks in southern Lebanon. Salam warned of repeated threats issued by Israeli officials regarding the intention to occupy the area south of the Litani River, in addition to statements about its annexation, noting that Israel blew up a large number of bridges on the river in an attempt to isolate the area from the rest of Lebanese territory. It also presented the displacement operations affecting residents of southern villages and towns, and the accompanying destruction of homes and the gradual dispossession of lands, which hinders the return of civilians to their areas. Salam stressed that these practices constitute a great danger to Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and violate international law and the United Nations Charter. He indicated that he asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs to file an immediate complaint before the Security Council, calling on the United Nations to assume its responsibilities and put an end to these violations.
