Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Mitri confirmed in a television interview that what is required is a minimum truce that allows for negotiations to take place, as these negotiations usually take place in a calm atmosphere and not in the context of military operations, indicating that what will come out of the meeting will be awaited, pointing out that the most important thing is not only what the Israeli ambassador will say, but also what the US Secretary of State and Michael Needham will announce, considering that talk about a ceasefire is at the same time talk about a temporary truce.
Mitri explained that the President of the Republic is the one who negotiates on behalf of Lebanon in agreement with the Prime Minister regarding initiating negotiations, stressing that the Lebanese ambassador in Washington represents the Lebanese government and not the spokesperson for Hezbollah, but he pointed out that what is known from the declared positions of the party leaders is that he also wants a ceasefire.
He added that nothing in today's meeting violates Lebanese law, as negotiations had previously taken place with Israel, considering that the negotiation itself does not constitute a recognition of Israel or the signing of an agreement with it, but rather is merely a communication, at a time when he stressed that the war is still raging in the south and Bint Jbeil, with continued bombing and the absence of any firm guarantee to neutralize Beirut, which prompts the demand for a ceasefire or a truce that allows discussion of how to negotiate with Israel.
