Hezbollah Political Council member Wafiq Safa said in an interview with the American Associated Press on the eve of the talks expected to be held in Washington between the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States, that the party will not commit to any agreements that may result from direct talks between Lebanon and Israel, considering that they are negotiations that it strongly opposes. He stressed that "the party is not interested in the results of this negotiation between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy, and it does not concern it at all," adding: "We are not bound by what they agree on." Safa responded to the Israeli allegations regarding the killing of 350 members of the party last Wednesday, pointing out that “none of our officials or cadres were killed in Beirut, and those who were killed there were 100% civilians.” On the other hand, he did not deny the killing of party members outside the Lebanese capital. He also referred to what Israel claimed about the killing of the party's Secretary-General, saying that this was not true, explaining that "Qasim's secretary was not killed, but perhaps one of his relatives was killed." He also confirmed that he was injured during the 2024 war between Israel and Hezbollah after being targeted by two Israeli strikes in Beirut, saying: “But God has destined me to survive.” Although the US-Iranian talks ended without an agreement, Safa said that the party was informed that Iran “was able to obtain a cessation of attacks” in the entire administrative area of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, including its southern suburb. He pointed out that the Israeli raids on Beirut and its southern suburbs had stopped since Wednesday, while violent fighting continued in southern Lebanon. Regarding the party’s entry into the war, Safa said that the party’s movements were proactive because its leadership believed that Israel was preparing for a second battle with Lebanon with the aim of destroying the party. He added that this was "an appropriate time for the party to rebuild a new equation and restore deterrence against Israel," denying the existence of any prior agreement with Tehran to enter the war if Iran was attacked.
