The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake (revised from 6.9) was recorded off the coast of northern Japan on Thursday, indicating that there is no risk of a tsunami. The earthquake occurred off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in the north of Honshu Island, at a depth of 50 kilometers, according to the agency. "So far, there have been no reports of human casualties, but we will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation regarding damage," government spokesman Minoru Kihara said. There were no immediate reports of serious damage. A woman from the town of Hashikami, where the tremor was strongest, told Agence France-Presse that the only damage to her house was a falling picture frame. Scenes broadcast on Japanese television channels showed goods scattered on the ground inside stores, while traffic appeared normal in the streets of the coastal city of Hachinohe, located on the Pacific coast near the epicenter of the earthquake. Some high-speed trains were suspended.
