A new earthquake struck the northern coast of Venezuela on Friday evening, days after two successive earthquakes killed more than 900 people and caused widespread destruction in the capital, Caracas, and its environs.
Eyewitnesses from Reuters in Caracas and Maracay reported that they felt the tremor, while the European Mediterranean Seismological Center announced that the magnitude of the earthquake reached 4.9 on the Richter scale.
Rescue teams continue searching for survivors amid the rubble of collapsed buildings, at a time when the government announced that 172 people are still trapped, while the death toll has risen to 920 people, in addition to 3,360 injured, with about 50,000 missing persons recorded.
The country was hit by two strong earthquakes on Wednesday, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 degrees. This is the second strongest earthquake that Venezuela has witnessed in more than a century, while international rescue and aid teams began arriving in the affected areas about two days after the disaster.
Reports indicated that the disaster might have a negative impact on the political scene, in light of interim President Delcy Rodriguez’s attempts to strengthen her political position after assuming the duties of former Vice President Nicolas Maduro, while a United Nations report estimated the amount of direct damage at about $6.7 billion.
