At its 48th session held in Busan, the World Heritage Committee unanimously approved the inclusion of Jabal Amel’s castles: Shaqif Castle, Tibnine Castle, Shaqra Castle, Deir Kifa Castle, and Shama Castle, on the World Heritage List and the World Heritage in Danger List, based on the request submitted by Lebanon. This decision constitutes an acknowledgment of its exceptional universal value, and also reinforces the commitment of the international community to protect and preserve it in light of the challenges it faces. This achievement is not limited to the inclusion of a new archaeological site, but rather embodies a success for Lebanese cultural diplomacy, and confirms Lebanon’s ability, despite difficult circumstances, to mobilize international support to protect its heritage, preserve its cultural identity, and enhance its presence and credibility within UNESCO.
