Hair experts warn that some dietary habits associated with the summer may affect hair health, even though many people focus during this season on protecting the skin from the sun and maintaining body hydration only.
With the popularity of barbecues, holidays, and outdoor dining, many people's dietary patterns are changing, which may lead to increased consumption of foods that lack the nutrients necessary for hair growth.
Dr. Emrah Sinik, founder of Dr. Sinik Hair Clinic, says that hair follicles need a continuous supply of proteins, vitamins, and minerals to maintain their strength, noting that a deficiency of these elements may affect the quality of hair and increase the possibility of hair loss.
He explained that some common summer foods do not cause harm on their own, but eating them in excess and replacing them with healthy options may deprive the hair of the elements it needs.
Summer foods that may affect hair health
1- Ice cream: Ice cream is one of the most popular desserts during the summer, but it contains high amounts of sugar that may make it an unsuitable choice when consuming it in excess.
Dr. Sinek explained that high sugar intake may be linked to increased inflammation in the body, which may affect the environment surrounding the hair follicles. Recurring high blood sugar levels may also affect the delivery of nutrients to the scalp, which may contribute over time to weak hair.
It is recommended to replace some sweets with summer fruits, such as berries, which provide vitamins and antioxidants that support scalp health.
2- Sausages and processed meats: Sausages are one of the staple foods at barbecue parties and summer picnics, but excessive consumption of processed meats may reduce the body’s access to the nutrients that hair needs.
Sinek points out that these foods may contain high amounts of unhealthy fats, while hair follicles need protein, minerals and vitamins to maintain healthy growth.
It is preferable to balance barbecue meals by adding options such as grilled chicken, vegetables, and fish, to obtain more beneficial nutrients.
3- Fried potato chips: Fried potato chips are a common fast food during trips and vacations, but eating fried foods frequently may affect hair health.
Sinek explained that unhealthy fats may increase inflammation and affect the scalp, which may make hair more susceptible to dryness, excess oil, or breakage.
It is recommended to choose sources of healthy fats, such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, and fatty fish, to support scalp health and strengthen hair.
4- Ice cream (ice popsicles): Although ice cream is one of the popular summer desserts, the fact that it contains large amounts of sugar and limited nutritional value makes excessive consumption of it an unbeneficial option for the hair.
Dr. Sinek confirms that hair needs a variety of nutrients, and that relying on foods rich in sugar only may deprive hair follicles of the vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain its strength.
He recommends choosing more nutritious snacks, such as yogurt, nuts and fruits, to provide nutrients that help support hair health.
Experts point out that maintaining healthy hair during the summer does not depend only on external care products, but also begins with a balanced diet and providing the body’s needs of essential elements.
