US President Donald Trump said on Israeli Channel 12 on Monday that the United States has decided to suspend military strikes against Iran to make way for a new round of negotiations, warning at the same time against returning to “very strong military action” if diplomatic efforts fail. Trump confirmed that Washington is holding "very deep talks" with Tehran, noting that the period available to achieve a breakthrough in the negotiations is short, and said: "If these talks do not succeed, we will return to very strong military action." Trump explained that the current negotiations focus on reaching a new agreement that leads to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of talks on a comprehensive nuclear agreement. Also, the US President stated that the talks are mainly taking place between Iran and the Sultanate of Oman, while Qatar, Pakistan and Egypt, in addition to Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are participating in mediation efforts. In response to a question about how long he would give the diplomatic track, Trump said: “Not a long time. Either there will be rapid progress, or nothing will happen at all.” He added that he agreed to give the negotiations a new opportunity in response to the mediators’ request, considering that “there is nothing to be gained and nothing to lose” from this step, noting that since the suspension of the US strikes, oil prices have declined and stock markets have risen.
