The House of Representatives approved the General Amnesty Law, with the amendments that were agreed upon, which include exceptionally reducing the duration of some penalties, by voting by a show of hands. Commenting on this, MP Bilal Abdullah stressed that “with the approval of the general amnesty today, we are turning a political page in which a Lebanese component was targeted by the regime, the security services, and the military court.” President Salam in a post on “X”: Towards restorative, non-retaliatory justice. Under the law, MP Imad Al-Hout explained that 79 Islamist detainees out of 146 will be released from prisons, stressing that “it will no longer be acceptable for anyone to be detained for a period exceeding the legal period of pretrial detention.” Representative Faisal Karami said: “I congratulate the families of the detainees on the adoption of the general amnesty law, and our main battle is the existence of a fair and just judiciary.” Regarding the Defense Minister’s speech, Karami stressed that “the constitution is clear: the prime minister speaks on behalf of the government, while the minister speaks in relation to his ministry, and the issue of general amnesty concerns the Ministry of Justice, not the Ministry of Defense.”
