The American agency NASA published pictures of an 18-meter-diameter crater on the surface of the moon, which was formed as a result of the fall of part of the Falcon 9 rocket belonging to SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk.
NASA acknowledged in early August that part of a Falcon 9 rocket had crashed on the surface of the moon.
The agency's statement said: "Thanks to a variety of imaging angles, scientists were able to examine the crater under different lighting conditions, which allowed them to reveal unique details. In the images where the edge of the crater was clearly visible, its width was measured: 60 feet (about 18 meters). It was also determined, on the basis of the length of the shadow, that the depth of the crater does not exceed 10 feet (about 3 meters)."
According to the statement, the images show light and dark beams emanating from the crater. Scientists say the dark lines are dust and rocks ejected from the surface, which have changed over time due to solar winds, cosmic rays and micrometeorites. As for the dark lines on the edge, they are new materials emanating from deeper layers.
The statement indicated that the images were taken between August 11 and 12 by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. It took six days to find the right location.
The Falcon 9 rocket of the American company SpaceX was launched in January 2025, carrying on board the Blue Ghost lunar lander (of Firefly Aerospace) and the Resilience rover of the Japanese company ISpace. Later, the second section of the rocket put the two vehicles on the flight path towards the moon. But due to the lack of fuel, the second section of the rocket was unable to return and burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere, and it also headed towards the moon. And it hit its roof.
