Today, Tuesday, the US Treasury Department announced the imposition of sanctions on 36 targets linked to the Iranian aviation sector, including 27 airline companies.
The Ministry explained that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) targeted airlines for their role in supporting the activities of the Iranian government and transporting weapons, individuals and illicit shipments.
She noted that the sanctions included Iran Air Tour, Iran Aseman, Kish Air, Qeshm Air, and Zagros Airlines, in addition to other Iranian airlines.
The sanctions package also targeted eight companies and one person in several countries, accusing them of providing services to Mahan Air, which is subject to US sanctions, or helping it purchase American-origin aircraft and aviation-related components through front companies and indirect shipping routes.
The sanctions coincided with the suspension of three aviation-related exceptions, which allowed air transit operations and the operation of flights to Iran with commercial aircraft of American origin or under American control by non-American companies.
