According to information, President Nabih Berri considers that what happened regarding the Iranian ambassador was directed primarily at him personally, especially since, prior to the issuance of the decision to deport the ambassador, he was on a visit to Baabda Palace, where he informed the President of the Republic that the Iranian-American negotiation might be an opportunity for Lebanon to stop the Israeli aggression against it. He also expressed his willingness to help narrow the gap between Baabda and Hezbollah, and the measure against the Iranian ambassador later came as a surprise to him.
Berri considered that what happened was “unbreakable,” and he assured those concerned that what was required was to cancel the decision to expel the ambassador and nothing less than that, “and no one is telling me, go and deal with the crisis and the solution is clear...”
The “Shiite duo” ministers’ boycott of yesterday’s cabinet session fell within the context of ringing the alarm bell, warning that it is not acceptable to continue the adopted approach in dealing with highly sensitive issues, at the risk of holding those making improvised decisions fully responsible for triggering a crisis of governance and confidence at an untimely time.
There are those who point out that the most dangerous aspect of the repercussions of the action taken against the Iranian ambassador is that it gave the team opposing this action the impression that there are those who want to exploit the current war to alter the balance of Lebanese power, and to make sensitive choices that require national consensus and cannot tolerate any solo or moody playing, even if Minister Yosef Ribi has the right from a technical standpoint to withdraw the ambassador’s accreditation, while severing relations is exclusively within the authority of the Council of Ministers, as the defenders of Ribi’s action confirm.
It is clear that Hezbollah and the Amal Movement have made their choice to confront the attempt to deport the Iranian ambassador by all possible political means.
The circles of the “Shiite duo” are certain that the Iranian ambassador will not be allowed to leave Beirut next Sunday, according to the deadline set for him, noting that this date is not included in the political calendar of the duo, and therefore the decision taken against the ambassador will be treated as if it did not happen.
