The President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, condemned Israel’s targeting of media figures Ali Shuaib, Fatima Fattouni and Mohamed Fattouni before noon today on the Jezzine road, and said: “Once again, the Israeli aggression violates the most basic rules of international laws, international humanitarian law, and the laws of war, by targeting press reporters. They are, in the end, civilians carrying out a professional duty. It is a blatant crime that violates all norms and treaties under which journalists enjoy international protection in wars, in accordance with the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their protocols. Specifically, Article 79 of Additional Protocol I (1977) and Security Council Resolution 1738 (2006), which prohibits the targeting of journalists and media professionals, as long as they do not directly participate in hostilities. As we strongly condemn this attack, we call on all international bodies to take action to stop what is happening on our land, and we reiterate our condolences to the families of the martyrs and to the press and media body in Lebanon.”
