The Lebanese negotiating delegation: We affirm our commitment to reaching an agreement that fully restores Lebanon’s sovereignty and guarantees the security of all citizens.
Fady Mahouly
After the end of negotiations between Lebanon, the United States of America, and Israel this night in Washington, the Lebanese delegation issued the following statement:
“The Lebanese delegation concluded two days of negotiations at the US State Department in Washington.
The tripartite negotiations that brought together Lebanon, the United States, and Israel led to tangible diplomatic progress in favor of Lebanon, as the parties agreed to extend the existing ceasefire for an additional period of 45 days, allowing the launch of a security track under the auspices and facilitation of the United States, starting from May 29, and contributing to consolidating the political momentum achieved during recent days.
Most notable results:
* Agreement to extend the ceasefire for an additional 45 days in parallel with progress on the security and political tracks.
* Launching an official political process that reflects Lebanon’s constructive engagement in the negotiations and enhances the chances of reaching a lasting peace settlement.
The next meeting is scheduled to be held on June 2 and 3 at the US State Department in Washington.
* The United States will proactively facilitate and strengthen channels of communication and military coordination between Lebanon and Israel, including a security track that is supposed to be launched on May 29 at the headquarters of the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) in Washington.
* The parties’ commitment to review the progress achieved with the aim of extending the ceasefire for an additional period if the negotiation paths yield positive results.
The Lebanese delegation welcomes the results reached today. Extending the ceasefire and launching an American-sponsored security path provides a necessary margin of stability for our people, strengthens state institutions, and opens a political path towards permanent calm and stability. Lebanon will continue its constructive engagement in the negotiations, in parallel with upholding its sovereignty and protecting the security and safety of its citizens.
The delegation affirms its firm commitment to reaching an agreement that fully restores Lebanese national sovereignty and guarantees the security and return of all citizens. Our goal is to transform the current momentum of the ceasefire into a comprehensive and lasting agreement that preserves the dignity, security and future of the Lebanese people.
The basic pillars of the Lebanese position:
* Restoring sovereignty:
Lebanon's top priority is to restore full state authority over all Lebanese territory, ensuring the protection of borders, preserving national sovereignty, and ensuring the safety of citizens.
* Return of displaced persons and reconstruction:
Lebanon remains committed to securing the safe and dignified return of displaced civilians to the south, supported by effective economic assistance and sustainable reconstruction efforts.
* Release of detainees and recovery of remains:
Lebanon continues to work towards the release of all detained Lebanese and the recovery of the remains of the martyrs and the deceased.
*Independent verification mechanism:
To avoid failures of previous arrangements, Lebanon adheres to a phased and verifiable implementation mechanism, supported by American guarantees, to ensure the implementation of all obligations without compromising Lebanese sovereignty.
Lebanon is negotiating for a future in which its borders are respected, its sovereignty is protected exclusively through its legitimate institutions, most notably the Lebanese Army, and its people are able to live in lasting security, peace and stability.
