At dawn on Monday, Lebanon is testing Israel's commitment to a ceasefire and stopping targeting civilians and civilian facilities, as well as Hezbollah's corresponding commitment, in preparation for launching a field truce phase that coincides with the expected security and political tracks.
An official Lebanese source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the contacts Lebanon is conducting after the first round of direct negotiations with Israel in Washington focus on establishing the ceasefire and stopping the targeting of civilian infrastructure and facilities, before moving on to subsequent steps. He explained that Israel had shown an initial willingness to commit if Hezbollah committed in return, noting that the Lebanese presidency was informed by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri of the party’s readiness for a ceasefire, with the possibility of issuing a public pledge to do so, before the extension deadline expired at midnight Sunday - Monday.
In parallel, Hezbollah escalated its political position on the ongoing negotiations, warning in a statement on the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the May 17, 1983 agreement of “attempts to reproduce what is more dangerous than the May 17 agreement” by pushing for a “full and comprehensive peace agreement” with Israel. The party considered that any path of this kind constitutes a “deviation” from national constants, rejecting what it described as “external pressures and dictates,” and holding direct negotiations responsible for strengthening “Israeli gains at the expense of Lebanon.”
