House Speaker Nabih Berri confirmed that what is important now, after the summit of US President Donald Trump and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Washington, are “the results on the ground and not just the form in which they appeared.”
He said: “The lesson after this meeting is to establish a ceasefire and withdrawals, which has not happened so far,” noting that “the withdrawal that was carried out from the western town of Zawtar on Monday is hardly considered a withdrawal, as the town is very small and was not completely occupied, and criminal bombings continue against homes, civilian neighborhoods and infrastructure, and attacks on people on the outskirts of the occupied villages continue.”
Berri believes that the success of this summit will come through achieving these steps. He added: “I previously said, 'Make achievements and come before me... and that has not happened yet.'”
Asharq Al-Awsat asked President Berri about his impression of the US President’s words, who said that Berri would join the process when he saw the progress achieved by the agreement. He said, laughing: “It seems that Trump understands me more than the Lebanese.”
