A Lebanese judicial source told Agence France-Presse that Lebanon arrested a network of five people, including Syrians, one of whom is a former intelligence officer, on suspicion of planning to launch attacks on government forces in the Syrian coastal region. The source pointed out that the network includes "two Lebanese and three Syrians, one of whom is a former colonel" in intelligence, and "machine guns, hand grenades, sniper rifles and explosives" were seized from them. The source added that the network is run by "an officer with the rank of major general in the former Syrian army, residing in Moscow and close to the ousted President Bashar al-Assad." He confirmed that the network's members received "military training" in eastern Lebanon at the hands of "fighters from Hezbollah," which was a major ally of Assad. The source pointed out that "the information available from the preliminary investigation indicates that they are planning to carry out operations against government forces on the Syrian coast," which is inhabited by an Alawite majority, and witnessed in March 2025 acts of violence of a sectarian nature.
